Onihanabi: The Demon’s Fireworks

img_1 One of the best sights of Noboribetsu Onsen Resort has to be the annual “Demon’s Fireworks” show during summer. Starting from June 1st, you will have a chance to go to the show every Thursday and Friday at the Hell Valley Observatory.

Set to begin from 8:30 PM, you will experience the fable of Hell Valley unfold before your eyes with a stunning performance from the Yukijin (hot spring demons) carrying spark-throwing columns of fire along the Demon footpath.

img_4 The hot spring demons, local residents of the Hell Valley, are real stars at the fireworks show. Often around this time of year, they are welcomed at festivals and events to drive away evil spirits and to bring happiness. One of the ways they can achieve this is through launching fireworks into the night sky, like what they perform at the show.

Other than the “Demon’s Fireworks”, you might encounter these good-willed demons at the annual Jogoku Matsuri and various other events. They often carry with them a large spiked club called a kanabo, and they are out to protect people who visit the region.
